REFLECTIONS

“AWG”
I believe that our God is a self-revealing God. God is always present with us and continually seeking to be in communication with us. Therefore, spiritual discernment is an important part of my life. I want to know what God’s desire is for my life and to be more receptive to the Spirit’s leading. In that this is significant for me, it is important to spend time with God. I am not always very available, however, because I get too wrapped up in other things. When this happens I close the day unfulfilled. I have lost my way, again.
What works for me is my “AWG” (Appointment with God). For several years I used that acronym on my calendar. It is important for me to make an appointment and recognize that it is vital to keep that appointment, or reschedule it if the timing is not right, but not to skip it. I am committing to rescheduling those times as I write this. I have continued a daily prayer time but it has been more about my needs than about my need to be quiet and listen.
Another practice for me, believing in God’s self-revealing nature and my desire to be attentive to the Spirit’s leading, is to study and meditate on Holy Scripture. However, this practice has been very haphazard since I have been in the position I am in now. Not having the faith community of a local church to hold Bible Studies and fellow clergy in a community to do lectionary study, nor having to prepare weekly sermons, I have let this practice get displaced. I miss being in a group with church people. My life is so much richer when I am in a faith-study group.
It is great to hear the stories of those of you are routinely engaged in spiritual growth disciplines. For those still searching for God’s call for you for today, I hope you would become a part of a group that intentionally opens themselves up to rich study of the Scriptures and make also make time for listening to the Spirit’s leading.
We welcome new pastors to our churches in the Prairie Rivers District. Reach out to them to include them in a Covenant Group or lectionary study as they come to us. I hope all of our pastors are able to come to our picnic on August 22 in Grand Island to meet new persons and be reacquainted with others. (See newsletter for more information on the picnic.)
